Overview

Traffic load is applied differently depending on the type of bridge. However, most engineers set the traffic load depending on the default settings of the software. In this session, Vishal Prasad from WSP (Sydney) will share the basic understanding of traffic load, the common procedure of moving load analysis, and the applications method based on his previous experiences.

We highly recommend this session to any bridge designers all around the world who has to deal with traffic loads on a daily basis.

Speaker
  • Vishal Prasad

    Structural Engineer, WSP

He has a master’s degree in Structural Engineering with over 8 years’ experience in design of bridges, cut & cover tunnels, and trackslabs. He is currently part of the Bridges & Structures team in WSP Australia. He has previously worked in India, U.K, and Malaysia in various stages of design including reference, tender, detailed design & construction phase support. He is familiar with Australian standards, Eurocodes & British standards.

    Question & Answer

Objectives

Key Point 1 : Influence Line Analysis

When analyzing a long span bridge, if there is no influence line analysis function, we spend a lot of time unnecessarily to set up an analytical model. Vishal Prasad from WSP (Sydney) will share the basic understanding of influence line analysis, an essential analysis function for considering traffic loads.

Key Point 2 : The Procedure of Moving Load Analysis

When performing moving load analysis, different design criteria should be considered for each country. However, many engineers are looking at the results by applying the default values without considering the default values of the software. The speaker will share the correct moving load analysis procedure using midas civil.

Key Point 3 : Traffic Load Applications

Traffic load fall under the category of static analysis, but require additional knowledge. In order to apply it in practice, it is necessary to know how to apply the traffic load for each types of bridges. The speaker will share the traffic load applications as based on his experiences.
