Bridge Insight : New Development in Long Span Arch Bridges
Overview
An RC (Reinforced Concrete) slab bridge is a type of bridge where the deck is made of reinforced concrete slabs. These bridges are commonly used for short to medium spans, typically ranging from 10 to 30 meters. The slabs are reinforced with steel bars to provide the necessary tensile strength, while the concrete provides compressive strength, making the structure capable of bearing the loads from traffic and environmental factors.
The slab distributes the load primarily by bending. The load is transferred through flexural action from the surface to the supports. Transverse distribution is also significant, as the slab spreads the load across its width, which helps reduce local stresses.
MIDAS CIVIL NX offers advanced tools to facilitate the design of slab bridges, including the Structure Wizard feature, which simplifies the modelling process. The software also accounts for variations in moments, especially in skewed bridges where moments can vary significantly. With MIDAS CIVIL NX, one can accurately compute design moments along the reinforcement, known as the Wood Armer Moment.
Furthermore, MIDAS CIVIL NX includes a “Plate Beam Design” feature, allowing for the comprehensive design of slab bridge. This ensures that the slab bridge designs are optimized for both strength and efficiency.
