Hầm là một kết cấu phức tạp, về mặc kết cấu hầm phải đảm bảo yêu cầu chịu lực kết cấu và ảnh hưởng các lớp đất, đá xung quanh lên kết cấu vỏ hầm. Ngoài ra cần phải phân tích ảnh hưởng từ việc thi công hầm lên các công trình hiện hữu. Phương pháp thi công hầm qua núi phổ biến nhất hiện nay tại Việt Nam là NATM (New Austria Tunnel Method). Ngoài ra phương pháp thi công hầm trong đô thị dành cho đường sắt, metro thường sử dụng theo phương pháp máy đào TBM (tunnel boring machine).
