OVERVIEW

Network arch bridges are a type of arch bridge where hangers are inclined and cross each other at least twice. This type of arch has been proven to be cost-effective in many applications, combining lower material usage with longer spans and stiffer structures.

In this session Andrea Caristo will share his experience on the River Irwell Crossing, a highly unusual asymmetric network arch bridge carrying rail traffic, and the first structure of its kind to open in the UK.

We recommend this course to any engineer interested in the design/modelling of network arches and cable-supported structures.

KEY POINTS

Key Point 1: Network arches versus conventional tied-arches; Differences and advantages.

We will share what he considers are the main advantages of Network Arches.

Key Point 2: Cable supported structures in MIDAS

We will give an overview of the cable modelling techniques available in MIDAS and the cable control functions available to the designer.

Key Point 3: Realistic bridge modelling through construction sequencing

We will discuss how complex construction sequences can easily be brought into MIDAS Civil and will show how results gathered on site for the River Irwell Crossing matched the predicted results from the MIDAS Civil FE model.
